Most of us only think about bedrooms as a room you sleep in and don’t give it as much as an afterthought. However, having a nice décor and atmosphere will not only be good for your bedtime routine but will probably encourage you to spend more time in the room, whether that’s to relax, read a book or unwind after a long day (no more endlessly browsing your phone at bedtime!).
If your bedroom needs a little refresh, today I am sharing five easy ways you can modernise it without having to redo the room completely.
Update Light Fixtures
If you are one of the countless people that have had paper sphere lampshades for years, it might be time to rethink your options. Light fixtures can do a lot when it comes to accessorising your room, and there are plenty of affordable options.
Bedside table lamps or larger floor lamps are ideal for creating a softer light in the evenings. Still, you could also make use of string lights and other smaller fixtures so you can ‘mix and match’ which lights you have on at any time and create the exact atmosphere you want. LED strips are very popular right now and help create a nice ambience at night.
If your bedroom doesn’t have a lot of natural light, make sure the ceiling lights are bright enough to provide more practical lighting when needed.
Review Your Window Setup
Replacing windows may not always be an option when you’re on a budget, but that doesn’t mean you can’t spruce them up a bit!
Curtains have a more modern feel than blinds, but there are now blinds with a more appealing style than the traditional beige sheet that most of us have. It will also depend on where your windows are situated and what you want.
Wooden Venetian style blinds are great if you want to keep natural light coming in, while ensuring privacy (if your windows are particularly exposed). At the same time, curtains will look great on the sides during the day and are usually better at blocking out light.
If you choose curtains, hang them up as high as they can go and make sure they go all the way to the floor for a more modern interior.
Change Up Colours
It’s no secret that painting your walls to change the colour can have a major impact on a room’s look without being expensive. It’s usually something you can easily do yourself, providing you take the time to research how to prepare properly.
While softer tones are usually recommended for bedrooms as they are more calming, some people prefer brighter, energising colours like red or yellow. If this is your case, we suggest focussing on creating an accent wall (or two walls maximum) to avoid overwhelming the room. Note that you could also use wallpaper to create an accent wall.
If you’re keen on softer hues but want something else than white, popular modern colours include anthracite grey or light blue, which also have the advantage to go well with traditional wooden furniture and give it a lift.
Upgrade Your Furniture
Speaking of furniture, if you have a bit more budget, you could consider replacing part of your bedroom or adding on to what you have. Replacing your bed may be difficult, but a bedside table, a cosy chair or a little dressing table can make all the difference (the latter for those of us prone to throwing books and phones on the floor at night)
When choosing furniture, remember that everything does not have to match. While there is nothing wrong with sets, mixing and matching furniture of different colours or materials can help to create a more modern feel, as long as all pieces can fit in a contemporary theme.
Rethink Storage
Finally, look at your current storage solutions and see if there is anything you could improve there. Whether you are making use of storage boxes, a chest to tuck your bedding away, a vanity for your jewellery or a nightstand that can double up as storage, the options are practically endless!
If you don’t have a lot of space available, there are now plenty of clever storage solutions made for smaller bedrooms, so make sure to check these out. Look at how you store items first before picking a solution.
You don’t want to buy a new wardrobe and realise your problem isn’t clothes lying around, but a bathrobe that could easily be hung up on the back of the door. It might not sound so modern, but sometimes the simplest solutions are best.
